di·vin·i·ty (n): the state or quality of being divine.
The divine presence. The divinity of God.
Is being divine simply the act of being God, or is it more than that?
Can a mortal be divine, or is this something that is for God alone?
Divinity or the divine are things that are either related to, devoted to, or proceeding from a deity. Hinduism encompasses a lush, expansive understanding of the divine accommodating a vast assortment of dynamic and multifaceted concepts. Hinduism sees the divine as not either one or many, but both; not male or female, but both; not formless or embodied, but both. Some of the most important deities in Hinduism are Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, Krishna, Saraswati, Durga, and Kali.
What is or is not divine may be loosely defined, as it is used by different belief systems.
- Divine force or power – Powers or forces that are universal, or transcend human capacities
- Divinity applied to mortals – Qualities of individuals who are considered to have some special relationship to the divine.
Overlap occurs between these usages because deities or godly entities are often identical with or identified by the powers and forces that are credited to them—in many cases, a deity is merely a power or force personified—and these powers and forces may then be extended or granted to mortal individuals.
